The mission of the Elverhøj Museum of History & Art is the collect, exhibit and preserve the art, culture, and history of the Danish culture of the Solvang community and to promote Danish art.
Once the residence of one of the communities most artistic families, the Elverhøj Museum was built by Viggo Brandt-Erichsen in 1950 in the style similar to the 18th-century farmhouses of Jutland in northern Denmark. The historic hand-crafted structure incorporates many elements of Scandinavian architecture, including a carved redwood main entry door, ornamental wrought ironwork, and hand-painted panels. After being extensively renovated and restored to its former glory, the Elverhøj Museum was opened to the public in 1988. Today, the Museum is one of only a few outside the borders of Denmark that is dedicated to the pioneering spirit of the Danish, the vibrant arts, culture and heritage of Denmark, and the Danish-American experience.
The Elverhøj Museum of History & Art features a range of permanent exhibits that celebrate the arts, culture, and history of Denmark, including Elverhøj Around Town, Viking Exhibit, and the Solvang Room Exhibit. The Viking Exhibit gives visitors the opportunity to learn more about Scandinavian ancestors of long ago with displays of stone age Danish tools, and weapons, photographs, and informative text that tell the story of the Vikings’ role in history and popular culture. There is also an interactive and hands-on display about the Viking runic ‘alphabet’ for younger visitors and a cottage with a diorama of Solvang in its early days.
The Elverhøj Museum Solvang Room Exhibit tells the story of Solvang with articles, photographs, and text contributed by residents that chronicle the establishment and development of Solvang back to its roots in 1910. The fascinating exhibition includes official photos of the Danish Royal family donated by the Danish Embassy, as well as personal photos from residents. The Museum also features rotating temporary exhibitions of art throughout the year and art demonstrations.
