The mission of the Pomona College Museum of Art in Claremont is to originate innovative and lively art experiences that promote critical thinking and creativity. The museum displays both historic and contemporary works of art for study and exhibition. By placing the artwork in context, the Pomona Museum delights, instructs, and engages its visitors. The creative energy of making art and experiencing art are linked through the museum's innovative, lively, and carefully designed programs and exhibitions. The museum's collection is often seen as a resource for teaching.
Visitors are encouraged to creatively explore and learn between performing arts, visual arts, social sciences, natural sciences, and the humanities. The museum is an active collecting museum, and the collections of the Pomona College Museum of Art are the heart of a teaching museum. Among the collections are more than 10,000 works of arts from contemporary photography and painting to pieces dating back to Renaissance panel paintings. As a resource for teaching, the collections emphasize conversation with objects of art as a way to investigate the diversity of human experience and increase visual literacy.
Within the museum's holdings are Italian panel paintings from the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, as well as over 5,000 works from Pre-Columbian to twentieth century American Indian artifacts and art, including beadwork, ceramic, and basketry. There are is also a collection of European and American prints, photographs, and drawings. Included in the collection of works on paper are examples of prints by German Expressionists, complete first edition sets of Francisco Goya's four series of etchings, and American photography from the twentieth century. The Pomona College Museum of Art collects work of arts in several areas, such as contemporary artwork that are showcased in the Project Series exhibitions.
The Pomona Museum's holdings are consists of the Native American Collection. The collection has grown over the past seventy years and now includes nearly 50,000 artifacts from Native American cultures. Pieces such as baskets from the Southwest and California, beadwork from the Great Lakes and the Plains, and Southwestern Historic and Pre-Columbian ceramics can all be found in the museum's holdings. The artifacts within the collection were significant to the daily lives of the people who made them and include, weapons, decorative works, cookware, ritual objects, and blankets. Group tours are available during the gallery's normal hours.
The Skyspace at the Pomona College Museum of Art is titled "Dividing the Light," and was created by James Turrell, who has created Skyspaces across the globe. Opened in 2007, the installation increases viewers' awareness of sky, light, and the activity of perception. Visitors viewing "Dividing the Light" sit on benches underneath a canopy framing a window facing towards the sky. A lighting program at both dawn and dusk covers the canopy in a range of colors that alter visitors' perception of the sky. Colors range from turquoise to goldenrod, from lavender to an ominous black. Situated underneath the window is a shallow pool that reflects the sky.
