Located alongside the Hudson River in New York, Saugerties Lighthouse is a historical landmark. Also known simply as Saugerties Light, Saugerties Lighthouse is the perfect place to learn about the history of Esopus Creek.

In 1869, the Saugerties Lighthouse was built to replace the old lighthouse, which was built in 1838. Almost 100 years after the new Saugerties Lighthouse was built, its Coast Guard service resolved. The Saugerties Lighthouse was purchased by the Saugerties Lighthouse Conservancy in 1986. The Saugerties Lighthouse Conservancy purchased the Lighthouse with the intent to restore it.

Currently, the Saugerties Lighthouse Conservancy directs the Lighthouse, which has now become a bed and breakfast and museum.

The main attraction of Saugerties Lighthouse is of course the Lighthouse. Visitors have the opportunity of exploring the surrounding area of the Lighthouse, as well as the nature trail. Aside from the exterior of the Lighthouse, the interior is comprised of the bed and breakfast and the museum.

The bed and breakfast is comprised of two guest rooms that are extremely close to each other. Both guest rooms share a bathroom and a living room. Aside from the rooms, guests will be treated to a delicious breakfast in the morning. While guests are allowed to prepare other food items in the kitchen throughout their stay, they are not allowed to use the oven. So, it’s advised guests keep cooking to a minimum. The Saugerties Lighthouse provides guests with a list of local restaurants to check out if they want to. It’s also important to note that while there is no air conditioning during the summer, it is heated for the winter.

As for the museum, it is located in the Lighthouse and is open on the weekends. The museum takes visitors through the history of Esopus Creek and the Saugerties Lighthouse. It’s important to note that you are required to schedule a tour if you want to visit the museum.

Whether you’re staying at the bed and breakfast, or simply visiting the Saugerties Lighthouse to explore its history, it’s important to note that you will have to walk a half-mile trail to get to the Lighthouse. So, make sure that you wear comfortable clothing and shoes, as well as pack lightly. For people who stay at the bed and breakfast, it’s advised you travel light and only bring the necessities. You don’t have to worry about bringing linens, towels, soap, shampoo, or conditioner, as those are provided for you.
