If you want to spend more than a day exploring Yosemite National Park and the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range on your outdoor adventure vacation, spend a few nights at the luxury Tenaya Lodge in California. The lodge is located at an elevation of 5,288 feet in the Sierra Nevada mountain range.
The hotel has a full-service spa, fitness center, as well as two pools, one indoor and one outdoor. Use the Activities Desk to arrange outdoor activities such as fly fishing, hiking, horseback riding, skiing and mountain biking. The hotel offers several programs just for kids.
The lodge was built in 1990. The 244 rooms are decorated with Native American patterns, colors and artwork. The central sitting area at the lodge has high ceilings, a huge fireplace and comfortable leather chairs.
The Sierra Restaurant serves signature Sierra Alpine cuisine, while Jackalope's Bar & Grill offers casual and family fare. On a warm sunny day, visit the Parkside Deli and order take-out.
Amenities for Kids
The hotel is especially attentive to its younger guests. Kids have their own check-in station at the front desk where they sign in and pick up an activity packet. There is a playground area with a sand box, swings, slides and monkey bars. During winter, there is sledding, innertubing and other winter activities. Camp Tenaya is a supervised indoor and outdoor activity program for ages 5 to 12. Activities include nature hikes, arts and crafts, games, movies, music and storytelling. The camp is offered on Fridays and Saturdays throughout the year. From Memorial Day through Labor Day, the program is offered seven days a week. Ride the Sugar Pine Railroad into the Sierra National Forest and enjoy Western cookouts featuring BBQ dinner, campfire singing and marshmallow roasting. The cookouts are available on spring, summer and fall evenings.
Winter in Yosemite National Park
If you want to have Yosemite National Park all to yourself, winter is the best time to visit. Yosemite Valley and Wawona remain accessible by car all year. You can join one of the ranger-led snowshoe walks to learn about the park. From mid-November through mid-March, outdoor ice-skating is available in Curry Village. Call the Curry Village Ice Rink at 209-372-8319 for more information. For more information, www.nps.gov/yose. If you plan to drive in the park, check road conditions before you go. The park newspaper, available online, lists all the current ranger-led programs in Yosemite.
