Located in Bessemer, Alabama, Alabama Splash Adventure is a family amusement park operated by Koch Family Parks, offering a variety of water and land amusement rides for visitors of all ages. Alabama Splash Adventure was originally conceived as VisionLand, constructed as a result of efforts spearheaded by Fairfield mayor Larry Langford.
Overseen by the West Jefferson Amusement and Public Park Authority, the part was constructed in 1997 at a cost of $60 million and opened to the public the following May, offering water and land amusements for visitors of all ages. The park expanded its attractions in 1999 and 2001, adding several new rides, but experienced a downturn in visitorship and filed for bankruptcy following the 2002 season. VisionLand was purchased by the Southland Entertainment Group and reopened for the 2003 season under new management, and soon attracted more than 345,000 annual visitors, making it Alabama’s second most-visited tourist attraction. In 2006, the park rebranded as Alabama Adventure, and in 2008, the park was sold to Adrenaline Family Entertainment, a subsidiary of Six Flags. The park saw several more changes of ownership throughout the late 2000s and early 2010s, and in 2014, it was purchased by Koch Family Parks, owned by the former CEO of Holiday World in Indiana.
Today, Alabama Splash Adventure encompasses an 89-acre facility near Interstates 20 and 59, located in the Birmingham suburb of Bessemer. The park’s regular operating season runs from May through July, with limited operation hours on weekends in August and early September. More than 20 rides are offered for visitors of all ages, including a full waterpark area and two roller coasters.
The park’s waterpark features a number of thrill attractions for older visitors, including a five-story Upsurge inner tube drop tower, featuring a 216-foot drop and a number of twists and turns for single or double riders. The Neptune’s Plunge dark tube slide offers four enclosed slide experiences, and the 50-foot-drop Splashdown slide ends in a turbulent whirlpool area. Milder thrills are offered at Kahuna Waves, an 800,000-gallon cool surf wave pool, and the Warrior River lazy river ride. The park’s Wipeout Adventure Course offers a 360-degree water obstacle course featuring ropes, towers, cannons, and interactive water elements, and the 4,600-square-foot Mist-ical Maze provides unexpected water thrills within a serpentine maze environment. Two interactive water play areas are also offered, including the all-ages Castaway Island area and Salamander Bay, which offers safe play experiences for young visitors.
Two roller coasters are offered as part of the park’s land attractions, including the Custom Coasters International-designed Rampage, which features a 120-foot drop at speeds of 56 miles per hour. A miniature Centi-Speed wacky worm coaster is also offered for young riders, allowing families to experience mild thrills together. Other thrill rides within the park include the Drop Zone drop tower, which raises riders 30 feet above the ground before engaging in a series of bounce drops, and the Jump Around spinning jumping ride. Family midway rides include old-fashioned Teacups and a Splash Express family train ride, and children’s rides include Little Bumpers water bumper cars, a Little Harbor boat ride, and a Crank-N-Roll miniature train. A Vault Laser Maze Challenge indoor laser area is also offered, encouraging visitors to navigate a series of laser beams to achieve quickest maze times.
A variety of restaurants and concessions stands on site offer standard American fare, including the Surfside Grill, which serves burgers, hot dogs, and chicken tenders. Classic-style pizza is offered at Mama Lizetti’s by the slice or whole pie, and old-fashioned pulled pork sandwiches are served at The General’s Diner. Funnel cakes, Dippin’ Dots, and soft drinks are also offered at concession stands throughout the park. All park guests receive free unlimited Pepsi soft drinks with admission at drink stations located throughout the park. Complimentary sunscreen, wifi, and life jackets are also offered.
