Chapultepec Zoo is thought of as the national zoo of the country of Mexico, and is considered to be one of the best zoos located in the region of Latin America. The zoo is situated on land that has long been of historical significance, dating back to the pre-Hispanic time period. The site was originally a sanctuary for the Aztec civilization, in which Aztec emperors, or tlatoanis, rested among the springs, bathing areas, and zoos. Following the historic vocation of the zoo, the current Chapultepec Zoo opened to the public in the year 1924 by Alfonso Herrera, a Mexican scientist.

Today, the Chapultepec Zoo in Mexico City is home to two hundred and forty-three different species of wildlife for visitors to see and enjoy. The most emblematic species of animals found at what is considered to be the national zoo of Mexico include jaguar, the Mexican wolf, axolotl, desert bighorn sheep, giraffe, giant panda, and many more. The zoo is a great attraction for visitors of all ages, but particularly for children. Kids in particular will be amazed and have plenty of fun watching the many different animals that call the zoo home. Guided tours are also available to learn more about the animals and the Chapultepec Zoo, as well as summer courses offered for children.

Alfonso L. Herrera, a biologist in Mexico, established the Chapultepec Zoo. The first animals of the zoo were two American bison and three lion cubs that were brought to Mexico from the United States. The collection of animals soon increased to 243 animals, and the zoo opened its doors to visitors in the year 1924.

The Chapultepec Zoo currently receives 5.5 million visitors on average every year from residents of the Mexico City area, other regions of Mexico, and tourists from other parts of the world. As a result, the zoo is thought to be one of the places people should visit in the world. The facilities at the zoo consists of exhibit areas, a visitor center, laboratories and a hospital to take care of the numerous animals that reside at the zoo, an auditorium, and a library.

The Chapultepec Zoo is made up of two different main areas of wildlife exhibits. The tropical forest area contains wildlife exhibits for visitors to enjoy featuring species such as the gorilla and the jaguar. The savanna area of animal exhibits is home to lions, rhinos, giraffes, and several other species of wildlife that can be found natively in the savanna habitat. The zoo is also home to an exhibit area for snakes, as well as a giant panda exhibit. Other permanent animal exhibits and a butterfly zoo complement the other attractions at the zoo.

Located in Mexico City’s Chapultepec Park, the Chapultepec Zoo is one of four different zoos situated around Mexico City. Chapultepec, however, is the most well-known zoo in Mexico. Established on the sixth of July in 1923 by Alfonso L. Herrera, the zoo houses nearly two thousand animals of over two hundred species.
