Catoctin Mountain National Park

A weekend visit or day trip to Catoctin Mountain National Park will give you the chance to stretch your legs, get back to nature, and learn all about the environment, surrounded by fresh air and pristine forests. The park offers several activities for day trippers, but to really appreciate the surroundings, you should try and spend a night or two sleeping under the stars. You can choose to pitch a tent in Owens Creek Campground, bring along your trailer (max length allowed is 22ft), or rent a cabin.

Hiking, picnicking, and bird watching are the main activities in the park and there are several trails available to suit all fitness levels, ranging from one-mile gentle family trails to the more strenuous eight-mile loop. Along the way, you can enjoy beautiful forests and plants and do some great bird watching.

If you visit in June, you can watch a Spring Blacksmith Demonstration. The park also offers weekend ranger-led programs during the summer months, including a popular Outdoor Skills for Teens program, which teaches young people about responsible camping, respecting the environment, and leaving the minimal footprint. Catoctin Mountain National Park is open year round but is at its best during the spring wildflower season, which starts in early April, and the fall foliage season, which usually peaks in mid-October.
