Casablanca is the largest city in Morocco. It can be quite hot in this interesting city, but, fortunately, it lies close enough to the Atlantic Ocean so that it gets some relief from the Canary Current that brings cool breezes with it. There are events that take place in Casablanca all year long, but the two best, the Festival de Casablanca and the Feast of the Throne, occur in July. This is one of the hotter months of the year in Casablanca so it might be too warm for some visitors. The best time to visit Casablanca is between November and May.

Getting From the Airport

There are several ways to get from the Mohammed V Airport into downtown Casablanca. There is a train station located on level one in the arrivals area of Terminal 1. Trains depart from this airport station every hour: travel time is about 30 minutes and the fare is very reasonable. A bus company called CTM offers a bus service that takes approximately one hour from the airport to the center of Casablanca. There are also taxis which are located on level 0 of the arrivals area. Arranging in advance with your hotel for a pickup at the airport is one of the easiest ways, especially for first time visitors. Photo: Masterovoy/Fotolia

Getting Around Casablanca, Morocco

Casablanca offers several ways to see its attractions and to explore its restaurants and shops. It has an extensive system of bus routes: you can buy your tickets on the bus, but the buses can be quite crowded during rush hour, so plan your day accordingly. The bus signs are in Arabic so you might need a little help from the staff at your hotel. Another option is the Casa Tramway: this is a rapid transit tram system. It is modern and connects downtown Casablanca with places all around the city. The town center and the old medina are best seen on foot. Photo: Masterovoy /Fotolia

Restaurants

Being located near the Atlantic Ocean, it should come as no surprise that seafood is an important part of Casablanca’s cuisine. Le Rouget de l’Isle is known for its old-school French cooking and it is inexpensive. Marche Central is an area on Boulevard Mohammed V: this area is worth exploring. On the one side of the market there is a street with small restaurants serving fresh fish. Paul Villa Zevaco is an upscale restaurant that reminds visitors of St. Tropez: white canvas umbrellas protect diners from the sun. No visit to Casablanca would be complete without a visit to the restored 1930s Rick’s Cafe. Photo: anyaberkut/Fotolia

Shopping

For first time visitors, the old part of the city called the medina is a place that should be at the top of your shopping list. Here you’ll find the souks, or markets, where you can easily get lost but have a great time in the process. In the souks you’ll find spices, copper bowls, Moroccan carpets, leather products, handcrafted silver products, food, and clothes. Although these beautiful products are not made here and are imported from other parts of Morocco, this should not deter you from exploring the markets and picking up some very unique and special gifts and souvenirs. Where to Stay

Casablanca is Morocco’s main economic hub as well as a stopover for many travelers flying in and out of the country. This means that many of the hotels are often full, so make sure to book your accommodations in advance and try to arrive early at your hotel so the staff doesn’t give your room away! Look for rooms with air conditioning if you visit in the summer and a room heater during the winter. Some of the most pleasant hotels are the Hotel Les Saisons with sea views; the Hotel Transatlantique, a renovated 1920s property; and Le Royal Mansour Meridien centrally located just off the Place des Nations Photo: photowahn/Fotolia
