10 Romantic Rome Vacation Ideas

Rome Vacation Ideas

The Pantheon

Located in the center of modern Rome, the Pantheon is a well preserved example of the ingenuity of ancient Roman architecture. The building is circular with a diameter of 142 feet and has a dome which follows the contours of a perfect sphere. Archaeologists believe that the dome was constructed by pouring a mixture of concrete into a temporary wooden template. In order to be able to support the dome, the walls are nearly 20 feet thick. The landmark is located in Piazza della Rotonda, fronted by a fountain with an obelisk at its center and an open air cafe. Piazza Navona is only a few minutes away. The entrance to the structure is through granite columns. The giant dome has a single opening in its center, which provides light to the interior. There is a marble floor of ancient Roman origin, and houses tombs of Raphael and Victor Emmanuel II. The attraction is open to visitors most days and Sunday mornings, except on certain holidays.

The Saint Angelo Castle

Saint Angelo Castle is a massive structure situated on the banks of the Tiber river. The castle is connected to the Vatican Palace through the Vatican Corridor because it was used by popes as a fortress in times of uncertainty. Today, there is a museum inside the complex exhibiting objects from the castle's 2,000-year history. After visiting the famous Vatican Museums you can walk to the castle or take a cab. Unless you really like to walk, the walk from the main square is not particularly interesting, so taking a cab is a better option. You can save your strength for exploring the inside of the castle and enjoying views from the bridge. You don’t have to enter the museum to get a good view since the bridge leading up to it is open to pedestrians.

The bridge is lined with giant angel statues, and an even more massive angel sits on top of the fortress, no doubt placed there as a symbol of protection for when the city was in trouble from invaders. The fortress has no windows which made it more easily defendable. Enjoy scenic views up and down the river during your approach to the castle. The fortress was built initially as Roman Emperor Hadrian's mausoleum in the 2nd century. Later, the structure was fortified and used as a fortress. If you enter the museum, you can also enjoy a spectacular view from the castle's terrace. For more information, can call +39-06-6875036. There aren’t many restaurants nearby, so once you are done exploring this area, you can take a cab back to your hotel or the Spanish Steps to find and outdoor café for a light snack, or a gourmet restaurant.

Piazza Navona

Rome has more beautiful squares than any other city in the world. Piazza Navona contributes to this collection with its exceptional length and three outstanding fountains. The shape results from an ancient stadium which once stood in the place of the square. The square is busy day and night with visitors who come to admire the fountains, the church Sant'Agnese in Agone, and other buildings. There are several cafes with outdoor seating which contribute to the relaxed ambiance. Artists and mimes entertain the onlookers. The central fountain, the Fountain of the Four Rivers (Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi), was designed by Bernini in the 17th century. The four rivers represented by the statues in the fountain are the Danube, the Nile, the Ganges, and the Rio della Plata. At the center of the fountain is an ancient obelisk. The other two fountains stand at the North and South ends.

The Capitoline Museums

The Capitoline Museums are located behind the gigantic monument to Victor Emmanuel, the first king of Italy, in the area called the Capitoline Hill. Rising high above the ancient Roman Forum, this is a charming pedestrian zone with a number of historic buildings and museums. There are two buildings facing each other: Palazzo Nuovo and Palazzo dei Conservatori. The square enclosed by the palaces was designed by Michelangelo in the 16th century. Here you will find one of the largest collections of classical statues, including Roman copies of Greek statues, colossal parts of the Constantine II statue from the 4th century, and the Etruscan bronze wolf with Romulus and Remus which dates back to the 5th century BC. Palazzo dei Conservatori also features an art gallery with paintings by Rubens, Caravaggio, Van Dyck, Titian, and others. The ticket office is located in Palazzo Nuovo - one ticket will give you access to both buildings. The museum is usually closed on Mondays and certain holidays.

Make a Wish at the Trevi Fountain

The legend says that anyone who tosses a coin over their shoulder into the Trevi Fountain will some day return to Rome. This legend, and the architectural beauty, make the attraction one of the most popular and photographed spots in town, especially with couples on a romantic trip or a honeymoon. The attraction was designed by Nicola Salvi in the 18th century and was made famous by Federico Fellini's La Dolce Vita. At the center of the fountain is Neptune, God of the Sea according to the ancient mythology. Water collects first in smaller pools underneath the marble statues and then flows to the center. The structure is located within walking distance of the Spanish Steps and Piazza Navona. It is situated in the Trevi square which, unlike the open Piazza Navona, appears very small.

The Vatican City

Any trip to Rome should include a trip to the Vatican which is a tiny independent state located in the center of the city. Most visitors end up spending the whole day in the area, visiting the Vatican Museums (Michelangelo’s famous Sistine Chapel is located here), the incredible St. Peter’s Basilica and the square in front of it. The whole area is walled off from the rest of Rome.

St. Peter's Basilica

St. Peter’s Basilica is famous around the world because the Pope addresses the public from the balcony which faces the square. Once you stand in the center of the square, you get an idea of how huge the whole complex really is. The square can accommodate thousands of people. Inside the basilica, you can view priceless artifacts, including Michaelangelo's Pieta , the dome designed by Michelangelo and priceless statues and paintings. Admission is free. If you are not quite sure where to get started, visit the Tourist Office in the square. For a fee, you can take an elevator up to get a view of the city from the top of the dome which is an incredible experience.

The Sistine Chapel

The chapel is famous because of its beautiful frescoes, especially the ceiling and the Last Judgement painted by Michelangelo Buonarroti. It was built in the second half of the 15th century and is named after Pope Sixtus IV, who was Pope at that time. Michelangelo painted the ceiling between 1508 and 1512 and the Last Judgement over the altar between 1535 and 1541. The chapel is located within the Museums which also house numerous paintings, tapestries, Raphael Rooms, the Egyptian and the Etruscan Museum.

The Vatican Museums

You will probably not want to miss the Vatican Museums which house some of the most important works of art in the world. Everybody has heard of the Sistine Chapel, painted by Michelangelo and other superb artists in the 16th century. Then there are Raphael's Rooms, four rooms decorated by the famous painter Raphael between 1509 and 1520. Other collections include the Gallery of Tapestries, the Egyptian Museum, the Gregorian Museum of Etruscan Art, the Vase Collection, the Gallery of the Maps and the Vatican Picture Gallery. In fact, the museum is so vast that you could spend a whole day inside and only see a small part of it.

If you are short on time, you should know that the Vatican Museums are laid out in a shape of a rectangle with the Sistine Chapel and Raphael's Rooms located at the farthest end from the entrance to the Vatican Museums. Since the museum is always quite crowded, it can take one hour just to walk from the entrance to the Sistine Chapel, even if you do not stop to admire the works of art along the way. The Vatican Museums are closed on Sundays, except the last Sunday of the month. The museums are open from 8.45 a.m. to 4.45 p.m. from April to October, and from 8.45 a.m. to 1.45 p.m. from November to March. Be sure to confirm the opening times before you go since schedules in Italy change frequently. Admission to the Vatican Museums, which includes the Sistine Chapel, costs Euro 8. Every last Sunday of the month, admission to the Vatican Museums is free. For reservations and information call +39-06-69884947.
