History:

The White River State Park is housed on 250 acres of land surrounding the White River, which flows throughout downtown Indianapolis. The land is full of rich history that features the progressive environmental and cultural changes that have occurred over the years.

In 1979, the first official White River State Park Development Commission was appointed by the governor. Their task was to establish the park and help deal with obstacles that may prevent that from happening. They were successful in founding the park and now it is one of the most beautiful parks in the nation.

In 1988, the Indianapolis Zoo was opened at the White River State Park, followed shortly by the opening of the Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art in 1989. In the years to follow, many more attractions were restored or opened, including the Washington Street Bridge, Victory Field, the Congressional Medal of Honor Memorial, the NCAA Hall of Champions, the Indiana State Museum, and the Farm Bureau Insurance Lawn (for outdoor concerts and events).
