The National Museum of Dance & Hall of Fame

The National Museum of Dance & Hall of Fame in Saratoga Springs is dedicated entirely to the art of dance. Located in the former Washington Bathhouse in the beautiful Saratoga Spa State Park, the Museum was established in 1986 by Marylou Whitney and is one of the few in the world that honors dance in this way. The Museum features and archives several growing and evolving collections of photographs, biographies, videos, documents, costumes and artifacts relating to the art of dance, as well as a Resource Room, which houses thousands of documents, periodicals, books and print items for research purposes.

The National Museum of Dance & Hall of Fame many galleries that house a range of three permanent exhibits and several rotating exhibits. The Museum also offers a range of dance and masters classes, residencies, lecture/demonstrations, and other programs through the Lewis A. Swyer School for the Arts. The Museum also offers a wide selection of unique programs, events, and workshops for all ages throughout the calendar year and is available for individuals or groups to rent for catered gatherings and events.

Exhibits at the National Museum of Dance & Hall of Fame include ‘Dancers in Film,’ which celebrates the relationship between the art of film and dancers and features famous actors and dance roles from the silver screen. ‘Art in the Foyer’ showcases the work of renowned photographer Paul Kolnik, who has enjoyed an intimate connection with the Saratoga Performing Arts Center for over 40 years.

The ‘Dancing Athlete’ is an innovative exhibition that explores the relationship between dance and sports, dancers, and athletes and the influence each of these practices has had on each other. ‘50 Years at SPAC’ is an exhibition that highlights the inspiring programming at SPAC over the past 50 years and includes a plethora of costumes, photographs, interviews, videos, and ephemera. There are also several exhibits showcasing Hall of Fame Inductees such as Patricia Wilde and Gregory Hines, and ‘Saratoga Favorites’ of the New York City Ballet.

The Alfred Z. Solomon Children's Wing is an interactive space designed especially for children and includes a Gallery, a reading corner, a video library, a staging area, movement and balance toys, and more. The Kids' Gallery displays several revolving exhibits of children's artwork and offers a range of programs for kids to create their own masterpieces.

Events

Events at the National Museum of Dance & Hall of Fame include a Multicultural Dance Day, which presents a variety of performances from various cultural dance groups ranging from tango, break dance, Irish step, Greek and belly dancing. The NYC Bus Trip explores the city by bus and takes in American Ballet Theatre performances of Serenade after Plato’s Symposium, Jessica Lang World Premiere, and The Brahms-Haydn Variations. Part séance, part ghost story, Hollowville is an atmospheric hymn to America that delves into important pieces of history such as the atom bomb.

Annual fundraisers at the Museum include the Purple Tie Affair which is held to raise funds for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, the Bridal Show, which provides guests with a superior range of resources and specialized wedding professionals to enhance the special day.

The National Museum of Dance & Hall of Fame is located at 99 South Broadway in Saratoga Springs and is open Tuesday through Sunday from 10:00 am until 4:00 pm with free admission on Tuesdays. Groups are welcome at the Museum, and group tours are available by reservation only. Docent-led guided tours, as well as arranged movement classes for all levels, are also available with no prior dance knowledge necessary.

Ideally located in the beautiful Spa State Park in Saratoga Springs and housed in the historic Washington Bathhouse, the National Museum of Dance offers a unique space for special events and functions such as weddings, receptions, and other celebrations.
