If you've rented a car in Hawaii before, you are probably thinking that there is no such thing as cheap car rental in Hawaii. Since car supply is limited on the Hawaiian islands, that means high prices, especially during the holidays.

Vacationers usually book directly through a car rental web site, through an airline or a travel agent. While on occasion you may get a deal, those prices are usually quite high.

How to Get the Deal

On a recent trip to Maui, we were quoted $400+ for a 3-day car rental through a major car rental company at Kahului airport. When we checked for prices on discounthawaiicarrental.com, we were quoted $140 for a similar car with the same car rental company. Although we never heard of discounthawaiicarrental.com before, the savings was so substantial that we decided to give it a try.

Our Experience

We received an email from discounthawaiicarrental.com confirming the reservation which we printed. We were informed that we could not use our loyalty number with the car rental company because that could impact the low rate we were quoted.

This means that we had to go to the counter to process the paperwork. The process did not take long. As a rule of thumb, if you are arriving on Maui early in the morning, there won't be many people picking up a car. But if you get there in the afternoon, especially during the holidays, you will probably have to wait.

The Facts

At discounthawaiicarrental.com, you can search for a car by company or by lowest rate. You do not need to provide a credit card to book - you pay for it at the counter at your destination. This means that it's very easy to cancel or modify your reservation, but you have to do it through discounthawaiicarrental.com. You cannot go through the car rental company web site or you won't get the low rate.

You can book a car at major Hawaiian airports and other locations on Maui, Oahu, the Big Island, Kauai and Molokai. Once you are emailed a confirmation, you are good to go. Be sure to print it so that you can get the cheap rate at the counter (although when we picked up everything was already in the computer).

Cars are available from Alamo, National, Enterprise, Dollar, Thrifty and Avis. There may be others, so be sure to give it a try and enjoy the savings.
