History

Ever since CALM was founded in 1983, its mission has been to preserve and promote the native wildlife found within California. Many injured and abandoned animals would come to CALM. Once an animal was taken care of and nurtured, employees would evaluate if the animal would benefit more from returning to the wild or remaining at the facility. Three years after CALM was founded, members of the Bakersfield community came together to provide adequate facilities for a public zoo.

In the late 1990s, the Kern Superintendent of Schools gained control of CALM operations. They transformed CALM into an official school site, which would have specific programs for educators and Kern County schools. Although CALM has many programs geared towards schools, anyone has the opportunity to visiting and exploring CALM. Photo: CALM Zoo

Special Events

CALM regularly hosts public and private events. Although most of the public events at CALM change every year, some of CALM’s seasonal events return annually. One of the most popular and awaited public events at CALM is HolidayLights.

In 2016, CALM celebrated their 14th year hosting HolidayLights. From late November to late December, CALM is illuminated with over three million lights. Throughout the lights, visitors can explore over 75 holiday-themed displays. In addition to the light displays, visitors can ride the Candy Cane Express and the Merry-Go-Round. After exploring CALM, visitors can enjoy food and beverages provided by Teen Challenge.

Aside from public events, CALM regularly hosts private events, such as birthday parties and weddings. Birthday parties can be held within one of four different areas: the Large Pavilion, Small Pavilion, Bear Pavilion, or Patio Pavilion. Birthday parties are typically held during regular hours of operation. Birthday parties can reserve a special animal class where a specially trained employee teaches guests about a designated animal and allows them to get up close and personal with the animal. Although CALM wants everyone to enjoy a private birthday party, there are some restrictions, such as the prohibition of barbecues, music, and piñatas.

Another popular private event hosted at CALM are weddings. Weddings can be held during or after regular hours of operation. Weddings can be held within all of the areas that birthday parties can be held in, as well as the Wedding Gazebo and the Classroom.

It’s important to note that all private events have to be reserved at least two weeks in advance to the event. For more information about attending a public event or hosting a private event at CALM, head over to CALM’s official website, or visit CALM during their hours of operation.
