In the mid-1980s, country-western star Buck Owens began to reflect on his early career. Most of the places Owens played in during the early stages of his career were small bars called honky-tonks. Owens wanted to simultaneously capture the charm of honky-tonks and an element of high-class concert halls. So, Owens began constructing Buck Owens’ Crystal Palace.

Owens was prominent in overseeing construction of Buck Owens’ Crystal Palace. It’s known construction took a while because Owens would consistently oversee construction on an area, dislike it, and reconstruct it so it was larger.

Ultimately, Buck Owens’ Crystal Palace costed over $7.4 million to construct and opened in 1996. Shortly after Buck Owens’ Crystal Palace opened, it was regarded as a Bakersfield landmark.
