On this map of Hawaii, you can see the main islands of Kauai, Oahu, Maui, the Big Island, as well as Molokai and Lanai. There are other, smaller islands in the Hawaiian chain, but they are not open to visitors.
The biggest of the Hawaiian islands is the Big Island, by far. It’s also the least densely populated because large parts of the land are covered by an active volcano. Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, marked in green on the map, is a place unlike any other on the planet. There you can see lush tropical plants, giant lava tubes that have been overgrown with trees and shrubs, as well as real lava flow cascading into the ocean.
When you visit the Big Island, you will probably stay in one of the hotels or resorts on the West Coast where there are many sandy beaches. Plan a day trip to Volcanoes, or spend a night in a nearby lodge for a unique experience.
The island of Maui, just north of Hawaii, is famous for its golf courses, sandy beaches and an array of hotels and condos. Several luxury resorts line the coast. Haleakala N.P., also marked green on the map, is a beautiful place to visit, whether you head to the summit or to the tropical pools.
Oahu is home to the famous Waikiki Beach and the large city Honolulu. If you have time, spend a night on Waikiki Beach which is quite unique. You can go surfing in the gentle surf just off the beach, shopping and explore the restaurants in the area.
Kauai is the northernmost island of the Hawaiian islands. Also famous for its white-sand beaches and stunning tropical scenery (Jurassic Park was filmed there), Kauai offers several resorts, friendly bed and breakfasts and unique camp sites.
