Things to Do
If the natural setting of the hotel doesn't relax you, the unique island spa will. The facilities and the open-air design of the spa are among the best we've seen in the world. The spa is part indoors and part outdoors. Treatment rooms are accessed from the outdoor garden which overlooks the Pacific Ocean. Arrive at least an hour early for your treatment to enjoy the huge hot tub with a view of the ocean and outdoor lounge chairs surrounded by flowers.
The spa at the resort is a beautiful facility with a design that incorporates the natural surroundings of Hana. Tropical plants and a gentle ocean breeze inspire and relax. The outdoor relaxation area provides privacy and a relaxing atmosphere before and after a spa treatment. The focal point of the outdoor garden is a huge jacuzzi connected to a pond with a view of the Pacific. The Watsu pool is also outside, shielded from the sun with canopy suspended over it. Other facilities include a steam room with a glass wall and an outdoor plunge pool, perfect for improving circulation. In addition to the outdoor relaxation area, there is an indoor relaxation lounge and several treatment rooms. It's a good idea to arrive early to be able to enjoy the natural surroundings and unwind before your treatment. Choose from traditional Thai massage, hot stone massage, Hawaiian Lomi Lomi, reflexology, Shiatsu, Polynesian body scrub, Reiki Therapy and an array of skin care services.
Honua Rainforest Mist Facial & Massage ($130 for 60 minutes; $185 for 90 minutes) is a signature aromatherapy treatment developed exclusively for the hotel. It combines a facial, body massage, reflexology and native fruits and nut oils to create a relaxing, sensual experience. The treatment incorporates the fluid movements of a Hawaiian lomi lomi to leave your whole body wonderfully connected. Throughout the Honua Rainforest experience, the therapist pays attention to the entire body, wrapping hands and feet in a hot towel and massaging them while the facial products take effect. Aromatic oils, which are applied during the treatment, have a wonderfully calming effect and help complete this relaxing experience.
Travaasa Hana offers complimentary Yoga and Aqua Aerobics classes to hotel guests. The resort has two swimming pools, tennis courts, croquet courts and a three-hole practice golf course. Guests have access to the 4,500 acre Hana Ranch for horseback riding, hiking and jogging. The spa shop sells organic cotton clothing as well as a selection of natural oils and lotions grown and bottled in Hawaii. If your skin gets irritated by preservatives and other synthetic substances, this shop is a great place to learn about natural cosmetics.
In addition to the spa, the hotel has two swimming pools, tennis courts, croquet courts, a three-hole practice golf course and horse stables. Guests have access to the 4,500 acre ranch for horseback riding, hiking, jogging and other activities. Yoga and Aqua Aerobics classes are complimentary to hotel guests.
Take an introductory hula lesson or 'ukulele lesson, open to everyone above the age of five. If you like flowers, join lei making which begins with picking blossoms off the trees on the hotel grounds. The Hawaiian Medicinal Plant Walking Tour will teach you about the medicinal plants used in traditional Hawaiian culture. Since many of these plants grow at the resort, you'll be able to see them while you learn about their properties.
The Beach & Hotel Pools
The "official" hotel beach is Hamoa Beach, a 5-minute drive from Travaasa Hana Hotel. The beach is surrounded by tropical plants and the stairs down from the road lead past colorful flowers. If you want to avoid sunburn, it's easy to move into the shade of the trees. Hotel guests get access to lounge chairs, towels, snorkel equipment, bathrooms and boogie boards.

Guests are always surrounded by water. The hotel offers two swimming pool located on the hotel's 30 oceanfront acres. In addition to the two pools, the luxurious Honua Spa spa has a secluded outdoor Watsu pool and an oversized hot tub with incredible ocean views.
The Wellness Pool overlooks the Pacific Ocean and features a whirlpool which is lit at night. The fitness center is located next to this pool. The area is open from 8am to 8pm. Hotel guests enjoy poolside food service. The Garden Pool Pavilion is located next to the tennis courts. Next to the swimming pool is a building used for daily yoga classes.
Travaasa Hana has 66 suites, cottages and guest rooms, including Bay Cottages, Sea Ranch Cottages and the Plantation House. Ocean Front and Ocean View Sea Ranch Cottages offer the most privacy and are ideal for a romantic getaway.
Sea Ranch Cottages overlook the landscaped resort grounds and feature tropical furniture and private verandas. These cottages are a favorite with honeymooners because they are spacious and secluded. Large lanai decks offer views of the ocean and you can watch horses graze in the distance. Cottage interiors are decorated with 18th and 19th century Kapa patterns found in the Bishop Museum collection in Honolulu.
In addition to the lanai, each cottage has a living area with skylights, wet bar, dining table and an oversized bathroom. The design is very open with large doors and high ceiling, giving you a sense of openness that extends into the unspoiled nature outside. In the morning, sit outside on the deck and sip organic coffee or tea while watching the waves crash into the rocky shore below.
Locally-gown Organic Food at the Restaurant
The Main Dining Room at Travaasa features a menu that changes daily and incorporates fresh fish from the Hawaiian waters as well as locally gown produce. Over the past few years, Executive Chef John Cox has worked with local farmers in Hana to grow organic fruits and vegetables for the restaurant. Many of the fish served are caught in Hana Bay by the local fisherman. If you like to experience new flavors, you'll notice that some ingredients are unique to Hana.
The dinner menu offers several choices, including a-la-carte dining and a tasting menu. For an ultimate culinary indulgence, try the Chef's Choice Custom Tasting Menu. The restaurant is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The tables on the terrace offer the best views of the resort grounds. If a rain cloud blows in over Hana, the restaurant staff will pull closed the glass panes without interrupting your meal.
At breakfast each day, the hotel presents guests with a copy of that day's dinner menu so that you can look forward to your meal all day. On certain nights, the hotel presents a special performance by local musicians and dancers enacting stories from Hana. A sumptuous Hawaiian buffet completes the experience.
In addition to the Main Dining Room, guests can order room service from the Hana Ranch Restaurant, or enjoy a casual meal at Paniolo Lounge. The Plantation House is a 3,000 square foot historic building with 3 acres of landscaped gardens which can be rented as a conference facility or as a guest house.
Vacation Activities in Hana
If you want to escape the crowds, this secluded town on the East Coast of Maui is a perfect getaway. Hana has a restaurant, a post office and a few guest accommodations. Hamoa Beach is a must-see on your trip to Hana. The bay is surrounded by dramatic cliffs and beautiful tropical plants and flowers. If you are feeling adventurous, visit the secluded Red Sand bay.
The Hana Bay is usually a safe place to swim if the waves are too large elsewhere. A 45-minute drive from Hana is the lower part of Haleakala National Park. This scenic area offers hiking trails and the famous Seven Sacred Pools which are open for swimming, weather permitting. Once your reach the Visitor's Center, park your car and follow the Kuloa Point Trail to see the waterfalls.
There are two ways to get to Travaasa Hana. If you want to drive the famous Hana Highway, fly to Kahului airport on Maui. From there, you'll reach the hotel after about two hours.
Alternatively, you can catch a Pacific Wings flight from Honolulu directly to Hana. Travaasa Hana offers a complimentary local airport shuttle from Hana airport.
